Robert A. Aronowitz studied linguistics before receiving his M.D. from Yale. After finishing residency in Internal Medicine, he received training in the history of medicine as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. Ronald Bayer is a professor at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University where he has taught for 12 years. Prior to coming to Columbia he was at the Hastings Center, a research institute devoted to the study of ethical issues in medicine and the life sciences.
